The stunning red Shimul flower gardens are a breathtaking sight, especially when the trees bloom in spring. As spring arrives, these magnificent trees become draped in vibrant red flowers, creating a spectacular view that resembles a crimson blanket across the landscape.
Shimul Garden, SunamganjLocated in Sunamganj, Shimul Bagan is the largest Shimul garden in the country, sprawling over more than 100 bighas. Situated in the Manigaon area of Badaghat Union in Tahirpur Upazila, this garden lies near the banks of the Yadukata River, offering a picturesque setting against the backdrop of the Meghalaya hills in India.
From the first week of February, visitors can witness the breathtaking display of red Shimul flowers. The garden is especially popular in the month of Falgun, attracting tourists from both near and far.
Established in 2002 by Zainal Abedin, a former chairman of Badaghat Union and an avid horticulturist, the garden began with around 3,000 Shimul seedlings that have since grown into towering trees. There is also a lemon garden nearby.
Best Times to Visit
To catch the red Shimul flowers in full bloom, plan your visit between February 10 and 25, as the blossoms last only 15 to 20 days. Alternatively, visiting during the rainy season reveals a lush green landscape, though the flowers will not be in bloom. During this time, you can enjoy a boat ride through Tanguar Haor, which is filled with water.
How to Get There
Start your journey by taking a bus from Dhaka to Sunamganj, which costs around Tk 500-550 and takes approximately six hours. Once in Sunamganj, you can find motorcycles, CNGs, and lagunas at Abdur Jahur Bridge.
For a motorcycle ride across the Barek Tila River, expect to pay around Tk 200, though you might negotiate it down to Tk 150. Each motorcycle can carry up to three passengers, including the driver. After crossing the river for just Tk 5, you can follow the paths leading to the garden, guided by local tea shops.
Plan to spend the afternoon in the garden before returning across the river to Barek Tila. From there, you can head back to Sunamganj by CNG or motorcycle. If you're looking to explore additional attractions, consider visiting in the morning to allow for afternoon trips to Takerghat, Niladri Lake, and Tanguar Haor. With two days, you can explore nearly all the local sights.
Where to Stay and Eat
There are no accommodations directly at Shimul Bagan, but nearby Barachra Bazar and Tahirpur have a few guesthouses and hotels. However, staying in Sunamganj city is recommended, where you can find hotels ranging from Tk 200 to 1,000.
Food stalls are available in Barek Tila, as well as in Takerghat, Barachra, and Tahirpur market. For better dining options, you’ll want to head back to Sunamganj city.
